Video: The Luxembourg Signal, ‘Laura Palmer’

Transatlantic collaborators the Luxembourg Signal make indie-pop in its original construct — the Twee As F*ck variety that had its origins decades ago in the anti-pop movement (as opposed to what gets called “indie-pop” today). They’re true-blue to the C86 and Sarah Records aesthetics, and their debut record in 2014 was a delight for fans of artists like the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Wild Nothing and Letting Up Despite Great Faults.

Not only are they are back at it, they have expanded their ranks. Since the debut, the band’s lineup of Beth Arzy and Betsy Moyer (vocals), Johnny Joyner (guitars), Brian Espinosa (drums) and Ginny Pitchford (keyboards) has grown to include Kelly Davis (guitars) and Daniel Kumiega (bass). “Laura Palmer” (a name that rings a bell from somewhere) is the first single from the Luxembourg Signal’s sophomore album, “Blue Field,” made with engineer Mark Rains (BRMC, Death Valley Girls, Cosmonauts, among many others) and arriving this fall via Shelflife Records. The album features a cameo by Bobby Wratten, ex-Field Mice main man and Arzy’s partner in Trembling Blue Stars, and the single will be released with a cover of “Let’s Make Some Plans” by Scotland’s Close Lobsters. You already have your indie-pop merit badge if you know who they are. “Laura Palmer” lilts along with dreamy vocals and swelling guitars until the about 4-minute mark, when, as they often do in this world, the shoegazers take over. Pretty heavenly.
