Earth Girl Helen Brown continues her space travels with “Mars,” the second EP of a planetary-themed series, out July 21 on Empty Cellar Records. First came “Mercury,” released back in April, to be followed in turn by “Saturn” and “Venus.” The Earth Girl Helen Brown Center for Planetary Intelligence Band (summarized as E.G.H.B.C.P.F.I.B.) includes Heidi Alexander (the Earth Girl herself), Tahlia Harbour, Sonny Smith, James Finch Jr., Jamin Barton, Tim Presley, John Dwyer, Jack Name, Dave Siteck, Ty Segall, Dylan Hadley and Mikal Cronin, in various configurations. As this EP concerns itself with the properties of another planet, “Mars” has a different vibe from “Mercury,” taking on war as its central theme. Playfully angular guitar lines and subdued marching drums accompany Alexander’s encompassing vocals on first single “Flower Of Darkness.” Proceeds from sales will benefit organizations committed to “the cessation of violent conflict, the promotion of peace, and the dissolution of the military industrial complex.”
