Early Winters

Early Winters is an accidental supergroup. With members hailing from three countries, the quartet first got together for an informal songwriting session, and eight years later — in between myriad other projects big and small — the collaboration has yielded three albums. “I Want to Break Your Heart,” out Aug. 11 digitally and as a limited-edition vinyl, will be Early Winters’ swan song, the band has announced.

Like its predecessors, 2011’s self-titled debut and 2014’s “Vanishing Act,” the new album is a mostly melancholic and at times devastatingly affecting album, rich in imagery and played and produced with the restraint of veteran players who know how to let songs breathe. The project combines the talents of: L.A.-based British singer-songwriter Carina Round, who has released four solo albums and sung with Puscifer, Tears for Fears and the Twilight Singers, among others; Canadian alt-country standout Justin Rutledge, who has seven solo albums and a Juno Award nomination to his credit; L.A.-based songwriter-producer-engineer Dan Burns, who has earned two Juno Awards; and multi-instrumentalist Zac Rae, currently a touring member of Death Cab for Cutie, whose list of playing and production credits is longer than his formidable beard.

If the title track of Early Winters’ new album doesn’t break your heart, the sweep of “Diving Bell” might carry it away. And what to say about the album’s lead track, “Amends,” except after riding its gorgeous piano line to the slow-building finish, you’ll want to see the whole movie.
