At Echo Park Risings past, Sundays have been something of a hangover day — more relaxed, less edgy, with smaller crowds that include the brunch bunch. That was true in some cases Sunday, but not for all of the closing day of the sixth annual festival. From SadGirl’s packed-to-the-gills turn at the outdoor Lost Lot stage to Egrets on Ergot’s vicious nightcap at the Echoplex, the festival did not run out of energy on its fourth day.

With the Lost Lot at capacity, SadGirl frontman Misha Lindes positioned himself on the east corner of the stage so he could play to throngs watching from the Laveta Terrace hillside above as well as the crowd below. There was even some minor moshing to the trio’s surf-pop-meets-doo-wop.

There were plenty of other highlights. Jewish rapper Kosha Dillz, saying he has experienced many forms of anti-Semitism, preached unity at the Echo, where he was joined onstage by Verbs. Finely attired rapper Old Man Saxon told the crowd, “I know you all are probably hung over, but thank you all for coming out on a Sunday.” The patio stage manned by the Grand Ole Echo folks saw great sets from Kat Myers & the Buzzards and Mapache (oh, those harmonies). Brightener, Rosie Tucker and LA Font prevailed in the Taix Champagne Room. The Play Like a Girl collective’s showcase at the Lost Room lacked nothing for intensity, with Spare Parts for Broken Hearts, Iress, Velvet, Slugs and finally the Aquadolls keeping the volume high.

The bigger crowds were outdoors at the Lost Lot, with Spelles casting spells and Holy Wars raging long and hard.

Later, back at the Echo, violin-toting Sudan Archives embraced the spirit of the whole weekend. “I drove three hours to be here,” she said, “so let’s dance.”
