Western Scene

“Going Back” is the latest slab of lush, cinematic indie-rock from Western Scene, the band helmed by singer-songwriter Tom Pritchard. It was back in 2013 that Western Scene released the EP “Listening,” made with producer/engineer Hugo Nicolson (Radiohead, Primal Scream), and Pritchard has worked on the follow-up a long time on both coasts with a rotating cast of players.

The song, Pritchard explains, “is about pushing forward and exploring the unknown without being chained to the past.” “Going Back” was first released with a lyric video that rekindled our long-held acrimony toward lyric videos.* Because the visual concept behind the video was so novel, we asked the band whether there might be a visuals-only version, and you can find it below. It’s the brainchild of Emily Wilder (previous work includes videos for Western Scene, Tracy Shedd and Lemon Sun), who stitched together thousands of images from Google Street View to create the visual. So take a road trip with Wilder and the band; you’ll catch on the lyrics quickly enough. (If you’re curious about the lyric video, here it is.)

* Basically, it’s this: Except in cases where the forms of words/letters are made into art, or in cases lyrics are too difficult to discern in a song, we find lyric videos to be a mild insult to the intelligence.
