Katzù Oso

Katzù Oso is the moniker of artist Paul Hernandez, whose kaleidoscopic synth-pop was born in his bedroom in Montebello. His early singles exude the heart-on-the-sleeve innocence of other songwriters dabbling in mellow, throwback psychedelia — Tame Impala, Ariel Pink and local teenage phenom Cuco come to mind — and after debuting with the single “Sophie” in April, Katzù Oso has been inspiring slow dances at neighborhood backyard parties and small clubs. Hernandez says he’s inspired by “the sounds growing up [near] a major metropolitan city, of being young and brown in America, and of being a person of color in a genre that is predominantly white,” but his new latest single “Cherry Love” appeals not to what people look like on the outside but what they feel on the inside. It’s a smooth, romantic jam, with the singer cooing over swirling vintage synths. Go ahead, hold somebody’s hand; Katzù Oso’s debut EP will be out early next year.
