Sam Fischer paid his dues writing for other artists (among them Jennifer Hudson, Clean Bandit, DJ Mustard and Sabrina Claudio), singing backup for pop tarts Holychild and guesting for various others (including on the Opia single “Secrets” and Wes Period’s “If You Want Me”). The L.A.-based Australian’s squeaky-clean pop-soul shifts sensibilities according to which producer is in the room. Morgan Taylor Reid gives Fischer’s latest single “Getting Older” a faintly old-school vibe reminiscent of Jack Garratt or Fitz & the Tantrums; “Same Friends” falls prey to gremlin gimmickry a minute in. Fischer recently announced that his debut EP, “Not a Hobby,” would be out Jan. 19. Of the new single, the Sydney-reared, Berklee-educated singer says:  “‘Getting Older’ is my favorite song off the EP and is as honest as I get. Simply put, the lyrics are just a retelling of the day we (myself, Asia Whiteacre, Morgan Taylor Reid & Johan Fransson) wrote the song, including the bird story. It’s a stream of consciousness put to music about the uncertainties of the future and what we can’t control, yet worry about constantly.”
