Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joey Dosik is a baller. His 2016 release, “Game Winner” turned out to be a basketball concept EP. That’s not what you’d call an intentional foul — Dosik penned the album while rehabbing from knee surgery after blowing out his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a pick-up game, and hoops jargon crept into his lyrical themes. Known for his collaborations with the likes Vulfpeck, Nikka Costa, Mocky, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Lake Street Dive, Dosik won acclaim far and wide for his soft touch with contemporary R&B, including a nod as an “artist to watch” from the legendary Quincy Jones. That might qualify as a career highlight, except that the Los Angeles native has gone on to perform at NBA games, including at Staples Center for his beloved Lakers.

Dosik has now signed to Secretly Canadian (Cherry Glazerr, Alex Cameron, Here We Go Magic, et al), which will release an album-length deluxe version of the “Game Winner” EP, with four additional tracks,on Feb. 23. With the news comes the Rob Stenson-directed video for “Game Winner,” which is like “Hoosiers” only with a cooler soundtrack. Documenting the comeback by a ragtag bunch named the Tigers against the black-clad Alligators, the video (which features some other local musicians) includes a crowd sing-along, some moves by the referee that aren’t exactly in the officiating manual and, of course, a buzzer-beating finish. Dosik himself displays a decent stroke, even if he doesn’t look like he could do much damage in the paint, but it’s his unselfishness that carries the day.

“My dad used to say, ‘Sports is a metaphor for life’” says Dosik, who is working on a full-length produced by Mocky. “There are many characters in this classic basketball comeback story to to identify with: The Underdog, The Leader, The Bad Guy, The Observer, The Team Player & The Motivator. At first look, the video and song are about basketball; but like ‘Game Winner,’ a song that holds multiple meanings, the video’s story of The Underdog is universal.”
