Rising star Princess Nokia lived up to the hype Thursday night at the El Rey Theatre, thrilling a sold-out room with songs old and new. After DJ Suzie Analogue opened the night with a set of jumpy techno beats and popular hip-hops songs (hosting a battle between two dancers at the end), Princess Nokia came on. Her fans went crazy as they heard her voice, with the curtains still drawn. She opened with “Tomboy” and played favorites like “Kitana” and “Bart Simpson” and older songs like “Dragons.” She took small breaks between each song to change or add to her outfit. Her performance was very sharp and the fans loved every bit of it. Halfway through her set, she reminded people to be safe and treat everyone well. She showed support for LGBT community and said “this is a safe space.” Her fans were constantly giving her gifts, and she passed out joints at one point.
