Shirley Manson returned to the GIRLSCHOOL festival for the second consecutive year and helped deliver its biggest moment during Saturday’s second day at the Bootleg Theater.

Manson, who was the featured speaker last year, appeared backed by the Girlschool Choir, performing beautifully reworked renditions of Garbage tunes including “What Girls Are Made Of,” “Only Happy When It Rains,” “The Tricks Is To Keep Breathing,” “Bleed Like Me,” and “Cherry Lips.” Then, joined by Fiona Apple — who was sporting a “Kneel, Portnow” T-shirt, a dig at the Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow — came the cover of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.”

Saturday’s diverse lineup included the likes of Amber Coffman, Akua, Pinky Pinky, A.W., Faarow, Nick and Navi, Mary Lattimore and Lesser Pieces. The night kicked off with the panel discussion, “How To Turn Social Media Activism Into Real Change,” featuring Whitney Bell, Ashlee Marie Preston and Vera Iván Ceja.
