For the second Valentine’s Day in a row, San Diego quartet the Frights packed an L.A. venue with screaming youths and played their surf-punk tunes to a sold-out crowd. (Last year they played at the El Rey with The Buttertones.) Similar to last year, this Valentine’s Day crowd was just as crazy. The audience swayed back and forth due to constant moshing, with the occasional crowd surfer riding their way to the front, and at one point a fight broke out. The Frights closed out their set with “Submarines” from their first, self-titled album and featured snippets of covers from a number of bands: “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance, “Santeria” by Sublime, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme, “Basket Case” by Green Day, “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey, “Under the Bridge” by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me”

When they came back out for their encore, singer/guitarist Mikey Carnevale told the crowd, “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, you sold this out, and that’s really bad-ass.” Carnevale spoke about being very tired, as the band spent the last two weeks in the studio working on their third album. He then told a quick story about arriving to the venue earlier that day while listening to the radio when their new single “Valentine’s Sux” played on KROQ, which they performed next. During their final song “Kids” off their second album “You Are Going to Hate This,” Zac Carper (of FIDLAR) came on stage to jam on a tambourine and join in on the lyrics. Carper produced the Frights’ second album, and was in the studio for their upcoming release. The Frights also have the third iteration of their festival “You Are Going to Hate This Fest 3” coming up this Saturday in their hometown of San Diego.

The show was opened by the DJ quartet Arpeggio’s House who were followed by local band Thee Commons.
