This past summer, the Buttertones went to Jonny Bell’s Jazzcat Studios to record an EP and wound up doing an entire album. After Bell produced last year’s “Gravedigging,” the band was eager to further push their sound with someone they consider a guru in experimenting with genres. The result, “Midnight in a Moonless Dream” will see release on May 4 through Innovative Leisure, hot on the heels of the band’s Coachella debut. First single “Baby C4” is a dark and deranged dance between rhythm and chaos. Overtaken by squealing horns and tumbling keys, it’s as if the instruments have gone mad and the musicians are the only thing keeping them from flinging themselves off a cliff. Recommended for doing the twist until losing one’s mind.
