Ears Wide Open: Adam Melchor

Following his swoon-worthy 2017 debut EP, “The Archer,” New Jersey ex-pat Adam Melchor is poised to unleash another heart-grappling collection, “Plan On You,” set to be released March 20 via R&R Digital.

The progeny of two generations of music teachers (with his grandfather playing 45 years in the New York Philharmonic), Melchor pursued an opera degree in college. After a season of auditions, he shelved his opera repertoire and picked up his guitar and started writing, performing and releasing his demos more in the line of plaintive singer-songwriter folk in the New Jersey/New York club circuit. A friend passed some of those demos along to another friend and after a co-write invitation, Melchor fell in with the right crowd and moved to L.A.

With assistance on electric guitar by Sean Tracy (Sid Sriram), production by Andrew Sarlo (Hand Habits, Empress Of, Big Thief and Caroline Rose, among others) and mastering by Chris Badami & John Ferrara at Portrait Recording Studios, the title track to Melchor’s upcoming EP is a sweet ode to living in accord with a basic goal in mind instead of a micromanaged plan. He seems satisfied and secure with where he is in life and all he needs now is that better half, singing, “But if you make a plan to love and let me in / My only promise is to not let go again / I won’t need a plan I’ll just plan on you.” The inspiration for the song, however, was more familial. “I wrote ‘Plan On You’ after my dad saw his dad for the first time in 40 years,” Melchor said. “His dad was unable to speak due to his health, so when they met, they didn’t talk much but the connection was still there. This song is about finding a way back into someone’s life, and I tried to imagine it through the lens of this moment between them, and what his dad would want to say if he could speak.”
