L.A. trio Crash Kings made their mark as the unlikeliest of shredders — their bluesy hard rock is made without guitars, although it often sounds like it, instead relying on analog keyboards and what they call “Clavinet-whammy bar wizardry.” The band — brothers Antonio and Michael Beliveau, now joined by drummer Tommy Rose — arrived with a bang. “Mountain Man,” off their self-titled debut released six years ago last month, was a big hit, although nothing on their follow-up album, 2013’s “Dark of the Daylight,” saw the same success. Now as an independent band, they are retrenching; Crash Kings released the fan-funded “Live Nudes” EP last month, and last week they debuted the new song “You Keep Me Runnin’,” from a full-length the band plans to release later this year. “I wrote ‘You Keep Me Runnin” about a guy I knew who was constantly chasing the next best thing,” Tony Beliveau says. “When I took a step back I realized how insane it all was.” The number is absent a lot of the pyrotechnics in Crash Kings’ previous work; in fact, it’s a bit reminiscent of Cold War Kids’ indie blues. The trio will be recording their sets during this month’s Monday night residency at the Satellite with an eye on releasing a live album. One thing for sure: Crash Kings keep runnin’.
