Ears Wide Open: Sleep State

Sleep State‘s lead singer Troy Ritchie seems like a guy you could introduce to your mother at Thanksgiving. She would approve of Ritchie’s neat haircut and his band of equally nice looking boys from Silverlake, Parker Jackson, David Greenwood, and Michael Haua. Upon hearing “Make A Move,” the first track from the band’s self-titled EP, mommy would say, oh yes, that guy is a mensch, and she would stuff him with mashed potatoes until his brain exploded. This fabricated scenario is based on watching videos of Ritchie performing on “The Voice” Season 7, his wholesome appearance, and the lyrics to “Make A Move,” which are so damn encouraging and kind, it would be evil not to acknowledge the song and give it a boost. With its poppy synth, melodic bass lines, Ritchie’s capable full voice, and reassuring lyrics about taking chances against all odds and looking at life with a child’s exuberance, “Make A Move” beams with that upbeat positivity reserved for Disney soundtracks and Hulu commercials. It is certainly possible Sleep State could be a band of lecherous monsters, but I highly doubt it.
