Fun fact: Lionel “Vinyl” Williams is the grandson of John Williams, who scored music for flicks such as “E.T.,” “Star Wars,” “Superman,” “Home Alone,” “Jurassic Park,” “Indiana Jones” and “Jaws.” This in no way prepares your ears for Vinyl Williams, aside from lending credibility to his musical genealogy. The young, curly-haired artist/musician is about to unleash his newest album, “Into,” on July 24 via Company Records, the imprint launched by Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bundick. It’s a strange yet soothing exploration of melodic atmospheres, even when it dips into galactic space noise, like around the 1:15 mark of “Space Age Utopia,” he doesn’t leave the listener floating oxygen-less for too long. The guy is into metaphysical dream worlds and digging into his songs can feel like swimming in an Alex Gray painting, just gliding through a colorful, gooey, astral projection, very calmly. No matter how weird things get, the music maintains a relaxed state of being. Williams sings and plays all the instruments, so we are clearly in a funky world of his design. He has control over all the elements and the weather is permanently warm with a strong chance of kaleidoscope.
