The Moth & the Flame continue their confident march in the footsteps of 1990s alt-rock luminaries. The L.A.-based quartet — Brandon Robbins, Mark Garbett, Andrew Tolman and Michael Goldman on bass — in May released the stadium-sized single “Young & Unafraid,” a follow-up to their 2013 EP “&,” which helped put them on the map with the song “Sorry.” Today they unveiled “Wishing Well,” a song that will appear on the “Young & Unafraid” EP, coming Sept. 25. “Wishing Well” (which will be an immediate-gratification download when pre-orders for the EP begin Friday) has been a staple of the foursome’s live set; it’s an aching, atmospheric piano-based ballad that sounds like a paean to a departed friend who has a “heart of gold, but all they see is bronze.” Robbins is at his most emotive and earnest here, confessing “wish that you were with us now” as his longing is drenched in keyboards and strings.
