LP

LP — she of the diminutive frame, small ukulele and hard-to-Google nom de tune — possesses a voice that can leap over buildings in a single bound. So it’s little surprise that the singer-songwriter’s two recent arrivals have a little different “look” than the powerhouse pop on last year’s Rob Cavallo-produced album “Forever for Now,” made for Warner Bros. That album marked the return of LP, born Laura Pergolizzi, to solo work after several years of success as a songwriter-for-hire and several rounds of record-label wrangling. She has now moved to to Vagrant Records for her next full-length, due early next year, and has been working with producer Mike Del Rio of POWERS. But far from the disco-pop of Del Rio’s duo, her new song “Lost on You” is a sweeping, lope-along ballad you’d find on a Western movie soundtrack next to Lord Huron, complete with LP’s signature whistling. The release of that song followed “Muddy Waters,” the kind of Sunday-go-to-meetin’ soul stomp that would have everybody coming out their pews. Suffice to say LP has her believers, and her congregation is growing.
