In an age where performers like Miley Cyrus and Rihanna are at the forefront of pushing boundaries and buttons in pop culture, a new, even younger generation is emerging. Pop debutante Gia is only 18 .. and she’s tackling an often-delicate topic in her first single “Only a Girl.” The song expresses having a relationship with another female. She explains the reasoning behind the song, saying, “‘Only a Girl’ represents girls all around the world who have experienced a relationship with another girl. It is who I am and what I like. I feel many girls will relate to it.” She sounds more the teenager in the other song she has debuted, “Hard Road,” where Gia confesses “I don’t even know / what I’m fighting for.” Production on the tunes comes courtesy of Pablo Dylan, the grandson of Bob Dylan. And the Lolita-esque music video for “Only a Girl,” the work of creative director Jesse Saint John and director Matthew Bowman, includes girls suggestively playing tennis in short skirts, licking ice cream cones and cozying up in the steam room. Miley wishes she thought of it first.
