Ears Wide Open: Hunny

The first single from young L.A. rockers Hunny possesses a pop heart and post-punk spine. After a scratchy, marching intro you’d expect from Modest Mouse or Franz Ferdinand, “Cry for Me” cuts loose with emotive vocals, declaring “I can make you cry for me.” The sextet — Jason Yarger, Jake Goldstein, Jacob Munk, Gregory Horne, Kevin Grimmett and Joey Anderson — recorded the tune with producer/engineer Doug Boehm (Tokyo Police Club, Ezra Furman, Girls, Roadkill Ghost Choir). While not the kind of debut that’s likely to turn the indie-rock world upside down, it’s a promising start for a band with an admirable back-to-basics approach.
