Premiere: The New Electric Sound, ‘This Girl’

0

Ever since they arrived in L.A. from Provo, Utah, toting their guitars and suitcases full of cardigans, the New Electric Sound has been pumping new plasma into the vein of “Happy Days”-era rock ’n’ roll, making taut, surf-inspired ditties that would have sounded just as good blaring from the jukebox at Mel’s Diner back in the day as they do from stages of L.A. clubs today. The quintet — singer-guitarist Scott Vance, bassist Tom Brinton, guitarist Ben Zabriskie, drummer Tony Carlson and keyboardist Nigel Goodwin — actually self-released their California album (which was, in fact, self-titled) before moving to California, and the big news is that the album is being retooled and re-released, with some additions. New to the mix is the unfailingly catchy “This Girl”; it’s a crisp, 2 1/2-minute argument that great hooks are never out of fashion. No release information yet on the album, but in the meantime, the band’s homemade video is a reminder to track this one down so you can put it on that mixtape for your uncle.
