Ears Wide Open: Dirty Dishes

Dirty Dishes are the relatively-new-to-Los Angeles duo of singer-guitarist Jenny Tuite and bassist/synth player Alex Molini. At this very moment, they are probably not missing the climate in their native Boston — nor are they missing the overdriven power chords of the alternative 1990s, judging from their scorcher of an album, “Guilty” (which came out last week via the aptly named Exploding In Sound Records). The anecdote is that the pair met when Molina puked on Tuite’s shoes at a party, and things have gotten messier from there. “Guilty’s” feedback-laden melodicism conjures up the Rentals blowing out all their gear and continuing to play; Tuite’s tart vocals recall another Boston luminary, Julianna Hatfield. The duo built its hometown base before relocating to L.A. after releasing 2012’s “The Most Tarnished Birds” EP, and the hilarious video for “Thank You Come Again” is set in Echo Park’s Ms. Donut. Belatedly, welcome to the neighborhood.
