Ears Wide Open: Talk in Tongues

The title of Talk in Tongues’ forthcoming album is “Alone With a Friend,” but it could just as easily be “Together Through History” — the Los Angeles psych-rock upstarts cover a lot of ground on their debut. They invite comparisons to the Byrds, and for that matter any number of “Nuggets”-era artists, the independent U.K. revivalists that came along two decades later and, of course, current purveyors of guitar-driven haze like Tame Impala and Jagwar Ma. Talk in Tongues came together from the shards of other bands, its members — singer-guitarists — Garrett Zeile and McCoy Kirgo, along with bassist Waylon Rector and drummer Bryan DeLeon — quickly finding creative sparks. They signed to Fairfax Recordings, and, working in Fairfax’s studio, completed the album with producer Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, Nick Waterhouse, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros). No release date has been announced yet, but Talk in Tongues’ debut will give us plenty more to talk about. Stay tuned.
