“Running,” the new single from the Lonely Wild, starts in a walk, with Jessi Williams’ mournful violin, then breaks into a trot and finally charges, seemingly into battle, with the cry “Don’t stop running!” It’s a typically sanguine outlook from the quintet of Andrew Carroll, Dave Farina, Ryan Ross, Andrew Schneider and Williams, whose brazen Americana, whether at full throttle or tender and unhurried, lays siege to every nerve ending under the Western sky. The song is the first single from the Lonely Wild’s sophomore album “Chasing White Light” (tentative date, May 26), which was recorded with John Vanderslice at the indie-rock veteran’s Tiny Telephone Studios in the Bay Area. On their debut, 2013’s “The Sun As It Comes,” the quintet fused a spaghetti Western sensibility with arena-sized folk rock, but as much as their sonic approach, that album’s ultimate strengths rested in its sometimes-noirish storytelling and embrace of big themes. “Running” sees the quintet coming fast out of the gate for the follow-up.
