Coachella: The Strokes play to their mythology

Who: The Strokes on the main stage
In 3 or Fewer Words: Statute of limitations.
I’ll Remember This Until: I find something to expunge the memory of Julian Casablancas marveling, bro-like, about how there was “a lot of tail out here” at Coachella. A magazine writer reported, via Twitter, spotting two young people fornicating in the middle of the Polo Fields during the Strokes set. Somebody else’s punchline was that their strokes were better than the ones onstage, which, for an hour while the world waited for Kanye West, was probably true. While their hits still sound fantastic and their important place in the timeline of rock history is secure, the Strokes circa 2011 have become best at propagating their own mythology and remaining magazine cover material. In fact, Casablancas may very well be play-acting his bad-boy shenanigans – all the better for those inevitable character-renewal stories that will accompany the release of his second solo album (like to have more juice than “Angles,” the Strokes’ fourth). Like their new album, the Strokes’ main-stage foray was neither embarrassing nor particularly distinctive; it was professional, leaving true love to the lovers.
What I’d Ask My Friend Who Was at Phantogram: So how was the eye candy there?
