Wymond Miles may be known as the lead guitarist for the San Francisco-based garage rockers the Fresh & Onlys, but his solo debut “Under the Pale Moon” (out now on Sacred Bones Records) has also been getting attention. Following up his “Earth Has Doors” EP, the full-length is a nice departure from his band’s psychedelic pop. Miles is still doing pop, but it’s spiked with a heavy dose of romanticism. Songs like “Pale Moon” sweep in and out with loaded emotions and vocals that only bring a sedated Julian Casablancas to mind (hey, the two even look similar), but then there are songs such as “Hidden Things Are Asking You to Find Them” that sprawl so far and wide that Miles mischievously plays with the boundaries of dream-pop. The album touches on elements much darker than those found on a Fresh & Onlys record, and that’s what may be most appealing to some fans.
