Who knows if the Lighthouse and the Whaler are actually singing about Venice Beach or Venice, Italy on their free single “Venice,” but no matter. The folk-rock quartet from Cleveland, Ohio could convince anyone of anything with their meticulously layered and shimmering instrumentation underneath those undeniable pop melodies. And one shouldn’t expect less from a group bold enough to have a Moby Dick-themed name. With help from producer and engineer Ryan Hadlock (the Lumineers, Ra Ra Riot), their latest self-released record “This Is an Adventure,” other songs like “Little Vessels” continue the group’s foray into their folk roots with a sophisticated spin. Think Fleet Foxes with a splash of PAPA.
