Who: Bat for Lashes in the Mojave Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: Unlike the rest.
Memorable Because: Bat For Lashes is a rare bird. In fact, Natasha Khan walked onto stage in a rainbow-colored outfit (which included a cape that gave her “wings”) with energy so electric she could have burst into flames like a phoenix. Yes, it was fitting of Khan to wear an eccentric outfit for her set. But it wasn’t long before she exclaimed “Oh my God. It’s so hot,” and seductively turned her back to the audience to shed the top half of her outfit and reveal a metallic bikini-like top. The thing is, nothing about this was inappropriate. The slightly sensual dancing combined with her flawless vocals added to the hypnosis in her storytelling, and the full tent was happy to take it in. “It’s a workout!” she shared at one point. “Are you going to dance with me to the next one?” The crowd encouraged Khan’s capering, which occurred during everything from ballads like “Laura” to the galloping “What’s a Girl to Do” and finally, her synth-pop closer “Daniel.” No one was going to stop someone as whimsical as Khan. It’s not like she was Shakira, and everyone was glad she wasn’t.
