Video: Father John Misty, ‘Funtimes in Babylon’

Despite what Father John Misty, aka Josh Tillman, says of “Funtimes in Babylon” – “Music videos don’t need blurbs.  It’s like putting a brief summary before a Garfield comic strip,” he asserts in the press blast – we’re going to say something anyway. The VHS-styled clip,  co-directed with Grant James (who also helmed “This Is Sally Hatchet“), follows a lonesome Tillman wandering a ruin-filled neighborhood. He is resourceful enough to find a cigarette to light and melancholic enough to do some of those infamous dance moves in front of a sunset despite all the garbage beneath him. It’s just another visual component to Tillman’s grim yet humorous take on life. Meanwhile, in left-field news, Tillman this week announced he is debuting a line of female perfume. “Innocence” by Misty was created in collaboration with Sanae Barber of SANAE Intoxicants perfume lab (Bonnie Prince Billy’s “Bonnie Billy”) and will be available in August in the variations of Sweet Orange Oil, Tunisian Neroli, Mimosa Absolute, Violet Absolute, Jasmine Grand, Bourbon Vanilla, and Linden Blossom. To followers who might wonder “What the heck?” Father John had this explanation on Facebook: “BECAUSE I WANT TO.” To fans who are just happy that he makes scents on record, “Fear Fun” is out now via Sub Pop.
