Liars have made a career of being inscrutable. Obstinately resistant to coloring between the lines, the trio’s forays into punk, noise, garage, electronics and art-rock have made them one of the most consistently challenging yet engaging bands on the landscape, and the weight of 2012’s album “WIXIW” seemed next-level for them. Today they announced that their latest musical anxiety attack, “Mess on a Mission,” would be out March 25 via Mute. The trio of Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross recorded the album in their L.A. studio. In the press release, Andrew explains the album’s tenor: “We are a reactionary, or maybe a better word is schizophrenic band. We go from one extreme to the other. Working on the last record was really doubtful and paranoid, and that’s fine, but it just meant that when work started on this one, it was the exact opposite. It was way more instinctual, fun and confident.†Follow along …
