Calexico kicked off its tour behind the new album “Edge of the Sun” in ecstatic fashion on Tuesday night at the Regent Theater, playing two hours of their Latin- and country-influenced indie-rock and welcoming a host of guests to join in. Joey Burns, John Convertino and friends played eight songs from the new album, their eighth full-length, with Nick Urata from DeVotchKa guesting on “Falling From the Sky” and “Follow the River” and Gaby Moreno and David Garza appearing on a handful of others, including the transcendent “Moon Never Rises.” Ireland’s Villagers, whose own new album “Darling Arithmetic” came out earlier this year, opened the night, telling the chatty crowd in a good-natured way, “Hey, everyone in the back … Can you shut up for a minute?” There were plenty of roars later for both bands, especially during Calexico’s serene take on 2012’s “Fortune Teller” and the mariachi-flavored rave-up of “Corona,” which found the band’s supporting cast (Jairo Zavala, Jacob Valenzuela, Martin Wenk, Ryan Alfred and Sergio Mendoza) jamming at full throttle.
