Premiere: The Flusters, ‘Lake St.’

Over the last two or so years since forming, The Flusters have become one of the most beloved bands of Coachella Valley. The vision of Doug VanSant, he recruited Danny White, Daniel Perry and Mario Estrada to form a band after moving to the desert from Philadelphia. Quickly, things came together for them. They even got to play the Coachella Music & Arts Festival last year, opening the second weekend at noon as a “local pick” and, despite the heat, they wore the black suits they wear at every show, a retro look reminiscent of old Palm Springs. The Flusters sound is modern pop with a throwback feel, which they describe as “dream surf,” owing to the vintage guitar tones, washy elements, and their inclination towards the gentle vocal delivery of romantic ballads. Citing Roy Orbison, the Ventures, Broadcast and Mazzy Star as influences, the latter comes through on “Lake St.,” a new single from their debut EP, “Extended Play No. 1.” VanSant says the song strikes a personal chord for him: “Lake St. is the street I grew up on, but the real meaning of the song is about my rise from the low dark points of my life.”
