Much of the music that’s prefixed by “alt-” in the R&B pop worlds relies merely on production or cult of personality rather than actual imagination. Which is why Bay Area-bred MetronOhm has been charming listeners since they alighted in L.A. Sparked by the creative chemistry of Annabelle Maginnis and Kofi Asare-Aboagye (aka Mike Blair), MetronOhm stirs the soul with a playful, sultry mix of jazz, R&B, folk and hip-hop, and they do it with instruments like violin, mandolin, guitar, sax, cello and pocket piano, with vibrant lyricism to boot. In May, they released an EP titled “Matter” that puts the fuse in fusion. Maginnis’ seductive but not overplayed vocals largely take center stage, although Asare-Aboagye coos plaintively on “Goodnight” and harmonizes wonderfully on “Birds Trill.” “Matter” is available on a name-your-price basis via Bandcamp.
