The Flaming Lips and Mac DeMarco teamed up Saturday night at the Shrine Expo Hall for varying degrees of madcap shenanigans that ended in a deluge of confetti, with the Lips driving home their traditional themes of love and togetherness and their 56-year-old frontman riding through the crowd on a unicorn, then atop it in a plastic bubble.
After experimental electronic artist Geneva Jacuzzi performed her opening set while encased in plastic, DeMarco and gang took over for feel-good 17-song set came with plenty of energy and a big smile, wrapping up with “Moonlight on the River,” “Chamber of Reflection” and “Still Together.”
Frontman Wayne Coyne and the Lips were greeted with a roar when they took stage, Coyne conducting and controlling the lights with his arms, leading up to an explosion of confetti so thick it often obscured the stage. They performed a few tracks from their new album “Oczy Mlody” (their 14th), covered “Space Oddity” and ended the night with their ecstatic existentialist anthem “Do You Realize?”
