Maybe the earth moved a little bit last month when it was revealed last month that X — yes, the original foursome of Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake — had been in the studio recording new material for the first time since 1985.

“Delta 88 Nightmare” is not exactly new — a demo of the tune was included as a bonus track on the 2001 reissue of “Los Angeles” — but October’s digital release marked the first time a finished version of the song had seen the light of day. It’s one of five tunes that the quartet recorded earlier this year with producer Rob Schnapf.

Shoppers for stocking stuffers will be happy to learn that the song (b/w “Cyrano de Berger’s Back”) will be released Friday as a 7-inch via Fat Possum Records.

Meanwhile, the video for the minute-and-a-half rager features Cervenka’s son Henry Mortensen (who also directs) and niece Carolyn Allen.
