Notes from venues around town …

THE MOON ROOM

Atwater Village’s Moon Room, formerly known as the Griffin, is slowly segueing into a live music venue as well as a bar-restaurant. On Sunday night, the venue, which is under new ownership, had a “soft opening” for music, with two artists performing on a stage that has supplanted the firepit at the north end of the room.

The pop-up sound system was good, and the lighting gave the stage a warm vibe. Singer-songwriter Adrian Bourgeois, who finished the night with a solo set, joked that the Moon Room’s domed brick backdrop made him feel as if he were in a scene from Harry Potter.

The Moon Room will have a bigger coming-out party on Thursday night when it hosts a free, branded show featuring L.A. trio Moaning.

THE SARDINE

New in suddenly booming San Pedro is The Sardine / Recess Ops, a combo music and comedy venue, record store, bar and coffeehouse located at 11th and Pacific (1101 S. Pacific Ave.). Launched by Todd Congelliere and Isaac Thotz, owners of the Recess Ops record distribution company, it has the support of local legend Mike Watt (who is playing there on Feb. 21). The venue did its first show in late January and has some enticing things on its calendar. A welcome addition for South Bay musicians and fans weary of the long trek to L.A.

PERMANENT RECORDS ROADHOUSE

The Permanent Records crew took ownership of Cafe NELA last August, and now the newly christened Permanent Records Roadhouse is filling up its concert calendar. The combination venue/bar/record store, at 1906 Cypress Ave., is programming both live bands and DJ nights. Out back, there’s an extension of the record store called the Garage, as well as a new patio. With the closing of their store in Echo Park, Permanent Records is down to two locations, the Roadhouse in Cypress Park and their shop on York Boulevard in Highland Park.
