Quarantunes: A playlist by Austin Weber

On the occasion of the release of his new EP, “Demos for No One,” Austin Weber tells Buzz Bands LA’s QUARANTUNES that he’s been keeping his nose in the books — with an eye toward history. Check out the premiere of the EP, the new single “Lately I’ve Been Freaked Out” (haven’t we all) and his very chewy playlist.

THE LATEST FROM AUSTIN WEBER

Austin Weber has carved out a niche for penning catchy, relatable and lovesick tunes and capturing a certain whimsical aesthetic in his videos — like singing ABBA while standing in a river in Japan, jogging in a park to “Using the Internet for French” or his funny foray into the forest for “I Don’t Want to Miss You (Like I Do).”

On the heels of his 2019 album “Love Songs for No One,” Weber returns today with the three-song EP “Demos for No One.” Highlighted by the love-drunk opener “Lately I’ve Been Freaked Out,” the EP captures Weber’s woozy romanticism in a more stripped-down fashion. When he’s exploring matters of his own heart, he’s a kid in a candy store … or, as the video for “Talk on Tuesday” suggests, just a kid.

HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MANAGE THE ‘STAY AT HOME’ EDICT?

Austin Weber: I’m doing pretty well all things considered. I have my own studio at home, so my days are spent trying to write and record as much as possible. I’m in the middle of Churchill’s “The Second World War” — started it just after the “stay at home” order hit. It helps to be immersed in another time, especially one even more uncertain and confusing than ours. I also always keep Warhol’s “From A to B and Back Again” and Yoko Ono’s “Grapefruit” on my writing desk, both great random-page-turners that are now old friends, as with Tolstoy and Hemingway. Which is, I guess, to say that I’ve been reading a lot.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHEN THIS IS OVER?

Getting out there and playing shows again! Can’t wait.

ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PLAYLIST?

Just a collection of stuff I’ve been chewing over recently.
