“The Ed Sullivan Show,” a staple of Sunday night television for 23 years through 1971, hosted some history-making musical performances. This month, some of th vasrity show’s highlights became available on YouTube, after a probably-thorny digital rights deal was negotiated. The show’s YouTube channel is rolling more of them out this week, including Ella Fitzgerald & Duke Ellington, Harry Belafonte, Jackie Wilson, Pearl Bailey, Richie Havens, the Righteous Brothers & Peggy Lee, the Four Tops, James Brown, the Jackson 5, the Supremes and the Temptations. The first two weeks of the rollout also offered a trove of musical greats, as well as some legendary comedians. Boomers might fall into a deep wormhole here; youngsters will only have to imagine the days before streaming and before MTV, when actually seeing your musical heroes onscreen was a rare thing.
