Los Angeles transplant J.P. Welsh releases music under the name Fuller, and he sounds like the marriage of punk-rock and indie, with touches of ’80s pop, as the new single “Yr So Retro” subtlety evokes.

“Yr So Retro” captures much of the sounds and effects the ’80s are known for, including reverb vocals, strong guitar leads and synth chords. The chorus feels like an anthem and the outro is “big,” so to speak — in a good way. This track feels like something you would hear in Guitar Hero, where everyone is singing along as you nail every note.

“You know the feeling when you can’t stop thinking about someone?,” Welsh says of the track. “You just keep running through that night, those moments, over and over again. You think to yourself, ‘maybe it’ll work out’ — but it probably won’t. … And it doesn’t really matter anyway, because the relationship is never as fun as the fantasy. ‘Yr So Retro’ is just a fantasy — to be played at full volume as you drive down a two-lane highway in the middle of a hot summer night.”

“Yr So Retro” paints a picture that feels nostalgic and somehow also of a future, fantastical event. To that, as the chorus chants, “turn up the music loud on the radio” and breathe in that summer air.

Fuller, who moved to L.A. from Austin in early 2019, has made a name for himself doing an interesting twist on cover songs — see Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” (In the style of The Strokes), Post Malone’s “Circles: (In the style of The Killers) and Doja Cat’s “Say So” (In the style of Interpol). His original work was made in collaboration with producer/songwriter Eric Palmquist. He debuted in March with the single “Favorite Poison” and followed with “Crush Me” in July.

Both will appear on Fuller’s five-song debut EP, “Crush Me,” due out Sept. 25.
