Singles roundup for our fickle Friday moods: Check out new songs from Wavves, Storefront Church and Jagged Baptist Club

WAVVES, “Help Is On the Way”

The follow-up to “Sinking Feeling,” which marked Wavves first new music since 2017, “Help Is On the Way” is a sonic earful that introduces the new album “Hideaway,” to be released on July 16. The new full-length, produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, is about what happens when you get old enough to take stock of the world around you, main man Nathan Williams says. “It’s real peaks and valleys with me,” he explains. “I can be super optimistic and I can feel really good, and then I can hit a skid and it’s like an earthquake hits my life, and everything just falls apart. Some of it is my own doing, of course.”

STOREFRONT CHURCH, “Total Stranger”

The follow-up to “After the Alphabets,” “Total Stranger” is the latest episode of cinema from Lukas Frank’s project Storefront Church. “There’s a photo of us that hasn’t happened yet,” Frank sings, letting the song (a collaboration with DIIV’s Cole Smith) imagine it. Sargent House will release Storefront Church’s debut album “As We Pass” on May 14, and we couldn’t recommend it any more if we were a sign-twirler on a street corner.

JAGGED BAPTIST CLUB, “CHOPx8”

Sonic insurgents Jagged Baptist Club, who put down their guitars (gasp!) for their first single of 2021, “Temptation Death House,” return with a new single that is simply a seizure in an 8-count. “‘CHOPx8’ started off as a longer more complicated song that just didn’t quite work,” main man Blake Stokes told the U.K. blog Play It Loud. “I took a break from it and came back a few months later with a mission: HAVE FUN! Equally inspired by Slow Thai, the Vines and the Jason Statham Movies ‘Crank’ and ‘Crank: High Voltage,’ I cut the song in half, sped it up and went buckwild with the lyrics. Now the song is an upper-fueled explosion with a chorus so catchy you can remember it even after those nights you can’t. CHOP!CHOP!CHOP!CHOP!CHOP!CHOP!CHOP!CHOP!”
