Ears Wide Open: OVIDEO

It figures that OVIDEO is the product of visual artists – the almost-no-wave noir of the SoCal quintet, which was founded by Antonio Beecroft, John Dembski, and Ronald Dzerigian two years ago, feels like a stark, moving cityscape rendered in black-and-white. Urgent beats, spacious guitar-and-electronic atmospherics, Dzerigian’s dire narration – it’s grainy southern California music that runs against SoCal’s grain. The band, which includes Kerry Buchman and Chris Waterton, just released its full-length debut, “8” (on vinyl, naturally), recorded with Aaron Espinoza at the Ship. The black-dressed fivesome go by funny nicknames when they play – Tony Product, R.V. Parks, Jerry Kerstain, Juice and CW – but the music sounds like serious stuff.
