I’ll start this item with full disclosure: I’ve been friends with John Girgus since I wrote this piece about Aberdeen’s “Homesick and Happy to Be Here” for my former employer over eight years ago. The album has held up well, and with bands such as the Pains of Being Pure at Heart and the Radio Dept. getting attention for their twist on the shoegazey twee-pop championed by the legendary Sarah Records, the L.A. quartet Aberdeen is worth revisiting. Three of the foursome’s EPs were recently re-released digitally, with bonus tracks and alternate versions, and any fans who swoon over the poppy/moody melodicism of POBPAH will want to check out “The Boy Has Gone Away,” at the very least. Since Aberdeen’s split, Girgus has gone on to play in Languis, the Spider Problem and, now, Non Ultra Joy. The band’s other principal, Beth Arzy, lives in London and sings with Trembling Blue Stars. Twee out, kids.
