[I had hoped to post this early in the week to preview the Charlatans UK’s L.A. show, but as you may have read, the band’s U.S. tour, including a scheduled stop tonight at the El Rey, has been postponed after drummer Jon Brookes collapsed onstage in Philadelphia last week. He is being treated for a brain tumor amid an outpouring of well-wishes from Charlies fans – please add mine – and the band is trying to arrange for a short-term replacement, according to a statement today. Meanwhile, “My Foolish Pride,” the band’s second single off their new album, was released this week. Here’s a look the first single:]
It is hard to believe that 20 years have passed since the Charlatans UK’s debut LP “Some Friendly” propelled the young Mancunian quintet into the international spotlight, and perhaps even harder to comprehend just how Tim Burgess and Co. have endured while so many of their peers have fallen by the wayside. It’s an impressive feat, and while the band’s recent output certainly hasn’t reached the heights of their 1990s heyday, “Who We Touch,” an 11th studio album produced by Youth (The Verve, the Futureheads), is something of a return to form. Album opener and single “Love is Ending” bristles with a punk-rock energy that suggests the Charlatans have no intention of slowing down as they enter a third decade.
