Ears Wide Open: Non Ultra Joy

1

[Disclosure: This trio is made up of longtime FOBB (Friends of Buzz Bands). Drummer Dave McKay is a contributor to this blog.]

The members of Non Ultra Joy come from such disparate backgrounds you’d hardly expect their work to cling to one aesthetic. Chris McRitchie made saw-toothed hard rock in Flupejac and Big Stone City; John Girgus had pop moments in Sarah Records’ Aberdeen and electro-gazers Languis and thrashy ones in Spider Problem; Scotsman Dave McKay drummed for ill-fated anthemic rockers Driveblind. The trio’s debut EP “Dissatisfaction” has all the markings of veteran guys plundering their record collections, but it can sound awfully fun over four songs (and make for fun games of Spot the Influence). “Hold On” nods to “Fascination Street”/”All I Want” Cure; you might hear echoes of Sugar, Buckcherry’s Josh Todd and the Jesus Lizard in “Pushing the Brand;” and “Another Day” sounds like a Replacements/Swervedriver/Lemonheads cocktail. Drink up; this one’s for Cure fans:
