Download: The Posies, ‘The Glitter Prize’

You know you’re in for a long music conversation when you meet somebody who remembers being more excited about hearing “Dream All Day” on the radio in 1993 than any damn grunge song. It was the first big hit by the Posies and remains a keystone in the collection of any self-respecting power-pop geek (a term I used lovingly, being in the club and all). The Posies never completely went away – principals Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow have worked the likes of R.E.M., the Minus 5, Bob Mould, the Disciplines, John Wesley Harding and William Shatner, as well as playing the revived version of Big Star until Alex Chilton’s death. But five years passed between albums, a drought that ended with “Bloody/Candy” (released in September on Ryko). It’s plenty sharp enough to get the conversations started again, and their current tour with Brendan Benson is as close to power-heaven as fans could want.
