News bits: Spaceland/Satellite, Air Conditioned, new LACMA series, the Limousines and other band notes

‣ The transition from Spaceland to the Satellite is still causing plenty of confusion***. With talent-buying company Spaceland Productions ending its relationship with the venue at 1717 Silver Lake Blvd. and the venue re-christening itself the Satellite (with in-house booking), it’s become a little tough to figure out who’s playing when. That’s because the Club Spaceland calendar lists only the shows at 1717 Silver Lake Blvd. that Spaceland Productions has booked. The Satellite’s new website lists everything. Which explains how a couple show-goers I spoke to had no idea about last week’s Happy Hollows/Epic Ruins show [pictured], which was a Satellite booking. Adjust your bookmarks accordingly.
- *** “Too bad about Spaceland closing, huh?” “They’re just gonna have dance music there, right?” — comments I have heard in the past week from people who don’t seem to read too well.
‣ The Air Conditioned Supper Club is closing. The Venice venue is changing hands and will apparently become a second location of the downtown-based sausage restaurant Wurstküche.
‣ Watch for an announcement soon of a new quarterly live music series at LACMA, which will present local bands doing shows in conjunction with the Wilshire Boulevard museum’s Muse program, in partnership with a certain local newspaper. The first show will be in January; the headliner won’t be announced until the week of Christmas.
‣ Random band notes: L.A.-based Dangerbird Records continues to add to its roster, inking San Jose-based electro-pop duo the Limousines – whose self-released album “Get Sharp” sounds, disappointingly, like somebody trying to nick MGMT’s radio hits and run with them. … O.C.’s Brothers at Sea [previewed in February] have parted ways. … The Chop Shop label continues to add to its roster too, with impressive Britpop quintet Scars on 45, fronted by ex-footballer Danny Bemrose, leading the way. [And since we happen to have this widget handy, check out “Give Me Something”:]

great news about the LACMA music series–they have had great success with the jazz series for a number of years now, i can see the same model working well for the local indie scene The Hammer has been very happy getting a number of new and younger patrons in its doors every summer for the music series there. The issues over Spaceland/Satalite have been covered alot over the past weeks, but i found the clubspaceland site to be misleading and odd they don’t have a directed link to The Satalite site from there. Maybe they didn’t part as that good of friends after all.
