Premiere: We Barbarians, ‘Headspace’

There’s a bit of foreshadowing in “Headspace,” the restless new single from Long Beach-based trio We Barbarians. “I need to get some movement / Get out of my headspace / Get into a good place / A place where I can wake up,” David Quon sings on the new song, the first to emerge from recording sessions with Dann Gallucci, the ex-Modest Mouse guitarist. Turns out that’s exactly what Quon and bandmates Derek Van Heule and Nathan Warkentin have in mind; after playing South by Southwest in Miarch, they’re relocating to New York City to continue work on the follow-up to their 2009 debut “There’s This There That.” Says Warkentin: “We’ve lived in southern California our whole lives, and nothing against L.A. but we’re looking for some kind of way to push us outside of ourselves, and maybe get a fresh perspective on things.” That makes their Feb. 3 show at the Echo kind of a farewell-for-now date; the “Headspace” 7-inch vinyl (with the equally good song “Chambray”) will be available there, and on an EP the trio has coming in the spring.
