All in a day’s work: Robotanists cover and release Radiohead’s new album ‘The King of Limbs’

This is either a publicity stunt or a stroke of genius, but we’ll bite: Robotanists, the L.A. quartet doing this month’s residency at the Silverlake Lounge, have covered Radiohead’s “King of Limbs” and released it digitally. Well, that was quick. Robotanists’ take on the latest from Thom Yorke and gang simplifies the arrangements – no surprise there – but it’s notable that Sarah Ellquist, Daniel DeBlanke, Keith Boyarsky and Preston Scott Phillips arrived at a reasonable facsimile of the Radiohead album, all within 24 hours of its release. So, how did you spend your weekend?

I have just lost all respect for this band, to cover the new Radiohead album a couple of days after it’s release is just stupid! First off, the singer of this band can’t sing..or at least not sing well to their own music, and to make matters worst she is trying to sing to Radiohead’s music? Wow…seriously my message to this band is stop trying so hard, and sorry but you covering King Of Limbs right after it’s release is dumb, nobody cares, work on your tunes, and get your singer to get some vocal lessons or stop getting them if thats the issue. She sounds like Sarah Mclachlan, which in my opinion doesn’t go well with spacey, lush, electronic sounds.
this band is a gimmick machine, and their singer is all show and minimal substance
gutsy…but it 100% comes off as gimmicky and substantially desperate. like Chris, I agree – focus on your own material and make your art more about substance and less about show. the singer is a decent performer live, but her actual technical singing is miles behind her “stage moves” – which, as a side note, seem oddly choreographed and forced.
OK. I like it. Thanks Robotanists!
Fantastic work. Is it a gimmick? Yes, a brilliant one. Just like when Hendrix covered Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 3 days after the Beatles released it.

Yeah. It seems a lot of decent bands aren’t afraid to do covers. Beatles included.
You are comparing Robotanists to Jimi Hendrix?HAHA Seriously i feel really bad for this bands guitarist and music maker Daniel, he is letting his wife ruin his tunes. Let me say it loud and clear, Robotanists are a dumb band who are cheesy and stupid live, and NO you are not cool for covering King Of Limbs people don’t give a shit. Radiohead would laugh at your efforts and probably poop on your covers. I’m mean seriously you were already cheesy enough to release a covers album, and now you are trying to cover a new radiohead record? Please do us all a favor and move FAR FAR away from California. Nobody likes your spoiled, self absorbed, i think my music is great but is shit attitude.
I have to admit that this ploy is pathetic. As someone stated above, I agree that a lot of people will see through the “gimmick” of this, which is exactly what it is.
here’s a better gimmick: discard your business plan and write good songs that connect with people
