Ears Wide Open: The Damselles & the TC4

While a lot of today’s hipster fuzz nods to the girl-group music of decades past, the Damselles & the TC4 simply give the genre a sloppy wet one. No “updating,” no irony: The time-warp R&B dispensed by vocalists Maria De Luca, Jillinda Palmer and Brittney Westover (three familiar faces from the Eastside indie-rock scene) comes with big smiles, three-part harmonies and the solid backing of the TC4, perhaps the only band named in honor of a record-store owner (TC stands for Todd Clifford, who ran the dearly departed Sea Level Records in Echo Park). Begun as a covers project, the Damselles have now released an EP of four originals. Twist and shout, please, but don’t leave any lipstick on the collar.
