Steve Cooper made music in L.A. as the Gray Kid before segueing into his electro-funk project Spirit Animal. Now based in New York City, Spirit Animal’s new single “I’m Around” (premiered Thursday on Spinner) finds him collaborating with a couple of his old SoCal pals on a croony electro-pop number. The tune features a string arrangement by Jenny O, and the soaring vocals of White Sea/M83 siren Morgan Kibby on the bridge. The song will be out on 7-inch vinyl via Mecca Lecca, with a B-side “New Man Now” featuring Chris Garneau. The physical package, by the way, features T-shirts, stickers and a digital cookbook written by Cooper, who formerly plied his culinary skills at Cafe Stella in Silver Lake. Get your sway on.
